One Laptop per Child: Redevelop Children's lives in Sichuan

On 26 June, I have arranged a briefing session for Mr. Anthony S. K. Wong, J.P., to meet with representatives of various NGOs, to introduce and suggest 'One Laptop per Child (OLPC)' as one of the ways to help redevelop people's lives in Sichuan.  Mr. Wong is the representative of the OLPC organization in the Asian region  and a Special Advisor of Innovation and Technology Commission.

During the Sichuan earthquake, 7,000 schools collapsed, millions of students are now out of school, they are in urgent need of facilities and materials to resume their studies. Mr. Wong suggested that OLPC's 'XO laptop' can facilitate the learnings of Sichuan children.

The OLPC-developed 'XO laptop' is an ultra-low-cost, power-efficient, responsive and durable machine, with built-in free and open-source ebooks and softwares, providing an opportunity for children to "explore, experiment and express themselves".

Mr. Wong

The OLPC organization would like to deploy 50,000 XO laptops in Sichuan as a start pilot project, aiming to help Sichuan children get back to their normal lives, and eventually promoting the project to other parts of China. The organization now seeks for donations and volunteers to help rolling out their plan.

Mr. Sin

I believe that this project is meaningful and could help relief the aftermath of the Sichuan disaster, if you would like to know more about OLPC, please click here. I look forward to the development of OLPC in Asia, and hope that we will gain your support on this initiative.

If you have any comments on the OLPC project, please do share your view by dropping me a few lines at cksin@sinchungkai.org.hk.

Green IT Talk Series - An Inconvenient Truth for IT?

Information technology (IT) is an effective way to help us go green and save our planet. However, IT is fuelled by carbon - consuming electricity in itself, and consuming even more electricity in peripheral support.  While we go green with IT, we have to ensure that IT itself is going green.
