World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) - Hong Kong

WTISD - Hong Kong is co-organized by my office and Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK). It is the second time which we join hands together, to celebratethe WTISD (previously known as World Information Society Day), which is held each year on 17 May starting from 1969 to commemorate the founding of the ITU in 1865.

This year, the theme of the WTISD is Connecting Persons with Disabilities: ICT Opportunities for All". The program is enriched with the introduction of new initiatives: Pan-PRD ICT Innovation Competition and Geo-caching Hunting Competition, targeting the youth community.

Launching Ceremony of WTISD was held on 17 May, more than 100 celebrities from the ICT industry attended the ceremony.

The Government Chief Information Officer Mr. Jeremy Godfrey and the Director-General of Telecommunications Mrs. Marion Lai Chan Chi-Kuen showed full support to the event, and shared their views on the future development of ICT.

Prizes were presented to the winners of the competitions.

The Communications Tour will be arranged on 23 and 24 May. This year, with an overwhelming number of applicants, we have doubled the event quota, 800 secondary and tertiary students will have the opportunity to visit significant information infrastructure and prohibited areas of various ICT companies.

For more information on the WTISD please visit our event page.

Promoting ICT is a continuous effort, and I would like to thank all the sponsors, companies and organizations, which contributed to the project in nurturing young talents and encouraging high quality students to join our industry. I hope that the WTISD will continue to be one of the most important projects, in arousing the interest and awareness of ICT industry among our younger generation.

Activities

IT for Disaster Relief - Relief.Asia

Relief.Asia is an online platform which was developed in the wake of the Myanmar Cyclone and Sichuan Earthquake Disaster that tore through the region in May, 2008. The website was deployed as a tool and platform to drive awareness and community contribution towards the rebuilding of nature-savaged regions such as Myanmar (also known as Burma) and Sichuan, through the application of Information Technology.

While we mourn for the victims, we can get involved by contributing financially (http://donate.relief.asia) or volunteering (http://volunteer.relief.asia) your time to relief efforts in Asia. We could even help out by simply spreading the news about Relief.Asia's (http://support.relief.asia) existence!
