Public
consultation on RTHK's role
The
Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) decided to terminate the
horse racing broadcast recently.
I support
RTHK's decision because I think its resources, which come
from the public, could be better utilized in other areas,
such as developing digital radio broadcasting and other new
media services. Indeed, RTHK has good experience in promoting
new technologies in broadcasting area. She is the pioneer
of Internet Broadcasting in Hong Kong. In 1995, she set up
the first Internet broadcast station, and subsequently, this
move was followed by other commercial broadcasters. Today,
we can also find a number of online-radio stations operated
by local NGOs or voluntary groups.
Even it
is not triggered by RTHK's recent decision, the role RTHK
always causes great debates. As a public broadcaster and funded
by public money, RTHK should be accountable to the public.
I think the administration should review the role of RTHK
and then conduct a consultation. The most appropriate way
is to let the general public determine the role that RTHK
should take and its further blueprint.
I, as
one of the 6.8 million citizens in Hong Kong, have shared
my views as above. It should be weighted as important as yours
or anyone from the rest of Hong Kong society. Please express
your views and drop me some word at cksin@sinchungkai.org.hk
