A competent and sufficient information technology
workforce is the most precious asset of Hong
Kong as an information society. However, you
may be aware that, the number of students
pursuing IT-related courses has declined substantially
in recent years. Such decrease in the number
of students in taking IT-related subjects
has a far-reaching impact to our industry.
The downward trend not only implies a shortfall
of quality IT manpower but also significantly
stifles the healthy development of IT industry.
To encourage and prepare more youth to engage
in IT education and careers, I launched an
"IT for Youth" Campaign in Sep 2005.
The purpose of this campaign is to make the
public aware of the full range of opportunities
and rewards available through studying IT-related
subjects. A number of public awareness programs
since August will be conducted to demonstrate
to young people, secondary school teachers
and career advisers that IT, as a key driving
force to the long-term economic growth of
Hong Kong, is an exciting, challenging and
rewarding career for our younger generation.
